Healthy Aging Month: The Supplements I Plan to Still Take at 70

Published

The best healthy aging supplements are the ones you can take every single day for decades: magnesium glycinate for sleep and muscle support, omega-3 fish oil for brain and heart support, a solid multivitamin for everyday coverage, and turmeric for joint comfort. I’m 38, and this is the stack I plan to still be taking at 70.

September is Healthy Aging Month, and I want to talk about aging a little differently than most articles do. Not creams, not miracle pills, not “turn back the clock” promises. Just the boring, powerful truth: the habits you build now are the ones that carry you later.

Why Am I Thinking About Age 70 at 38?

Fair question. I’m 38 years old, and most days I feel better than I did at 28.

But a 2024 health scare was my wake-up call. I was 255 pounds, running on processed food and no routine, and my body finally sent me a message I could not ignore. Over the next stretch I lost 77 pounds, going from 255 to 178, with whole food and a steady routine. No fad diets, no surgery. Size 42 pants down to size 32.

That experience changed how I think about time. I stopped asking “how do I feel better this week?” and started asking “what do I want my body to be capable of in 30 years?” I want to be the 70 year old who still gardens, still swims, still lifts a little at the gym, and still hauls his own boxes at the flea market.

You do not get that version of yourself by accident. You get it by doing small things, daily, for a very long time.

Let’s Break It Down

Here is my whole philosophy on aging in one sentence: aging well is not something you react to later, it is something you prepare for now.

That means the supplement stack I take today was not chosen for quick results. Every bottle on my counter had to pass one test: can I see myself still taking this at 70? If the answer was no, it did not make the cut.

Supplements are the supporting cast, not the star. Whole food, movement, sleep, and water do the heavy lifting. But the right supplements may help fill the gaps, and gaps tend to matter more as the years add up.

Which Supplements Made My Lifetime List?

These are the ones from my real daily stack that I consider lifelong keepers, and why.

Magnesium Glycinate 275mg ($22.99). This is my evening anchor. Magnesium plays a role in sleep quality and muscle function, and I notice the difference personally. If I skip it for a few days, I feel it: choppy sleep, tighter muscles. Sleep is one of the most underrated pieces of healthy aging, and magnesium may support the kind of deep, consistent rest your body repairs itself with. I’m going deeper on magnesium and longevity in a full post later this week, so keep an eye out for that one.

Omega-3 Fish Oil ($24.99). If I could only keep two supplements for the rest of my life, this would be one of them. Omega-3 fatty acids may support brain, heart, and joint health, which is basically the trifecta of things I want working well at 70. Most of us do not eat fatty fish several times a week, so this is one of the simplest gaps to cover. This one also gets its own deep-dive post this week.

Complete Multivitamin with Herbal Support ($19.99). This is my insurance policy. I eat clean, lots of steak, eggs, fresh veggies from the garden, cottage cheese. But no one eats perfectly every day, and a good multivitamin may help cover the everyday basics so the occasional off day does not turn into a long-term gap.

Turmeric with Ginger and BioPerine ($24.99). Here is where I get personal. I run a flea market booth on weekends, which means long days standing on concrete floors. Those days used to leave my knees and lower back barking at me. After I added turmeric to my evening routine, those long days got a lot easier. Turmeric may support joint comfort, and for anyone who plans on staying active for decades, comfortable joints are the whole ballgame.

What About Gut and Immune Support?

I would be leaving out a big piece if I did not mention the gut. A lot of long-term wellness research keeps circling back to gut health, and I wrote a whole post on why immune health starts in the gut if you want the full picture.

For me that means Probiotic 60B with MAKTREK ($29.99) as part of the rotation, and Quick Guard Immune Defense ($29.99) seasonally when fall and winter roll around. I do not treat immune support as a panic button for when I feel run down. I treat it like everything else on this list: quiet, consistent support, year after year.

What the Research Says

Since this post leans supplement-heavy, here is what the general research actually shows. I keep this honest, no cherry-picked miracle numbers.

Magnesium. Research suggests many adults do not get enough magnesium from diet alone, and studies have linked adequate magnesium intake to normal muscle and nerve function and healthy sleep patterns. That is why it may support better rest as we age (source: NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

Omega-3s. Studies have linked omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA, to heart and brain health in aging populations, and ongoing research continues to explore their role in supporting cognitive function over time (source: NIH).

Staying active. This one is not a supplement, but it belongs here. Research consistently shows that regular physical activity is one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging, supporting mobility, strength, and independence later in life (source: CDC). Supplements may support the machine, but movement keeps the machine running.

How Do You Actually Stick With It for Decades?

Three things have worked for me.

First, tie each supplement to something you already do. My magnesium, omega-3, and turmeric live next to the coffee maker, so my evening routine reminds me without any willpower involved.

Second, keep the stack small enough that it never feels like a chore. I would rather take five things forever than fifteen things for six weeks.

Third, know your why. Mine is simple: I got a second chance in 2024, and I am not wasting it. When you think in decades, skipping a day matters less and quitting matters a lot more.

FAQs

When should I start taking supplements for healthy aging?
Honestly, now. The point is not your age, it is the length of the habit. Someone who starts a simple, consistent routine at 38, or 58, gives their body more years of steady support than someone who waits for a wake-up call like I got.

Do I need a huge stack of supplements to age well?
No, and I would argue the opposite. A small stack you actually take every day beats a cabinet full of bottles you forget about. Food, sleep, movement, and water come first. Supplements may help fill the gaps.

Which supplement would you pick if you could only choose one?
For me, magnesium glycinate, because sleep touches everything else. Omega-3 is a very close second. Your answer may be different depending on your diet and your goals, and that is fine.

Are these supplements only for older adults?
Not at all. Everything in my stack is part of my routine at 38. The whole idea of this post is that healthy aging support works best when you start early and stay consistent, not when you scramble later.

Final Thoughts

I do not know exactly what 70 will look like for me. But I know what I am doing at 38 to meet that guy in good shape: eating real food, moving my body, sleeping well, and keeping a short list of supplements I trust enough to take for life.

This week I am going deeper on two of them, magnesium and omega-3, so if this post is the map, those are the close-ups. Healthy Aging Month is a good excuse to start, but consistency is what actually gets you there.

If this helped you, share it with someone who needs it, or shoot me a message and let’s talk!
